If you love Aligoté or never tried it before, you're in for a treat because the domaine de la Varenne has some of the oldest and healthiest aligoté in the appellation.
Besides having the cutest label representing the local rabbit breed, le Lapin de Varenne, this Aligoté is the most joyful and out of the box Aligoté of the trilogy. It smells like a bag of Krema (soft gummies) and brings me back to my childhood, big time. Note that the wine is bone dry. It's just the feeling.
Before I tried it at the estate, the winemaker Laurent told me: 'You'll see, that's the funky one'. 🕺
Coming from Amsterdam, I was expecting something completely untamed with an unchained messy energy. 😇 It turned out to be different, more uninhibited, but funky is not the word I would have thought about.
This wine is a great first step to discover the grape variety. Pure, great acidity and yet very approachable.
